Our Mission

The Little Rock Sister Cities Commission has partnered with the Mayor’s Youth Council to administer a Youth Leadership Program for Little Rock teenagers who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential. The mission of this program is to groom the next generation of leaders in our city, and will be accomplished in two ways:

1. By educating program participants about the various facets of Little Rock in a similar manner as the Chamber’s Leadership Greater Little Rock program, so they can be effective ambassadors of our city, and

2. By educating program participants about international culture through travel to Little Rock’s five sister cities.

Our Program

Program participants will travel to one of Little Rock’s sister cities each year as youth ambassadors and experience the history, language, food, culture, arts and daily activities of the city they visit. Our program participants, who will be called “Youth Ambassadors,” will live with host families during the exchange to fully appreciate and develop an understanding of the country’s culture. While abroad, they will attend local schools and/or universities, tour US Embassies, and experience other educational outreach opportunities. An important aspect of the Youth Leadership Program is the Little Rock-based curriculum, which participants will complete in the months leading up to the international trip. The curriculum will consist of one session each month in which participants will learn about government and politics, healthcare, justice, education, economic development, and the arts. Also, the Sister Cities Commission will work with city leaders in our fi ve sister cities to establish a similar, education-based program so that participants will learn about the various facets of our sister cities in the same manner as they learned about Little Rock.

In addition to our normal activities during 2011, we have three key initiatives being finalized and introduced:

Economic Development - A vital activity for both the City of Little Rock and its Sister Cities. Using our long established relationships to create economic activity is a natural fit.

Effective Communications – Keeping the Citizens of Little Rock informed of the commission’s activities is the key for all to understand how the commission is contributing to the advancement of the City of Little Rock and its Citizens. We will use the new e-mail newsletter and the Little Rock Sister Cities Commission Facebook page to keep all informed.

Youth Leadership Program – This Spring we will host an event to educate more citizens about the program and gather support for the next class.
